Binders
BNSL Binder
The BNSL Binder is one of our most versatile suspension agent/binder liquids. It utilizes an alcohol-acetone based vehicle and is the binder system that is used with ZYP Coatings’ mainline aerosol sprays. BNSL Binder produces medium hardness coatings with medium water resistance. The binder also has a medium ability to suspend solids and generally produces low to medium viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With its non-aqueous binder liquid, BNSL Binder is generally not very reactive to materials, so that most any powder can be used with it. Other properties – long shelf life of over12 months; flash point of 15 F. The BNSL Binder is often a preferred binder for first trials due to its utility in air environments and inertness to most powder additives.

Type YK Binder
Paint Binder that Allows Researchers to Produce Their Own High-Temperature Coating by Just Adding the Powder of Choice
The YK Binder is a nonaqueous-based binder liquid that is used for washcoatings such as yttria. The term “washcoating” is indicative of a low hardness coating similar to a whitewash house paint. Thus, coatings produced with this binder liquid will always have low hardness on drying and have low water resistance. The binder also has a relatively low ability to suspend solids and generally produces low viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. Other properties – long shelf life of over 12 months; use ONLY in inert or vacuum atmospheres. ***Note-contains NO yttrium oxide

Gel-P Binder
Paint Binder that Allows Researchers to Produce Their Own High-Temperature Coating by Just Adding the Powder of Choice
The Gel-P Binder is a water-alcohol-based binder liquid that uniquely produces high hardness coatings on heating to its 350 C for around five minutes. Gel-P has relatively high water resistance, while also having a uniquely high ability to suspend solids (can suspend relatively high-density powders). The binder typically produces medium viscosity coatings with most materials. With a pH of 2-3, careful consideration should be used concerning whether the powder to be used is stable in an acidic medium. Other properties – long shelf life of over 12 months; used in all use-atmospheres to 1500 C.

HPC Binder
Paint Binder that Allows Researchers to Produce Their Own High-Temperature Coating by Just Adding the Powder of Choice
The HPC Binder is a water-based binder liquid that is used for suspending many materials. Coatings produced with this binder liquid have relatively low hardness on drying and can be easily washed back off if re-wetted (i.e., have low water resistance) until they are heated to the outgassing temperature of 150 C where water is the only outgassing product. The binder has a moderate ability to suspend solids and generally produces medium viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With a pH of 7, the binder is generally not very reactive to materials. Other properties – long shelf life of over 12 months; used in all atmospheres to 1500 C.

Type YZ Binder
The YZ Binder is the water-based binder liquid that is used for typical yttria or zirconia washcoatings. The term “washcoating” is indicative of a low hardness coating similar to a whitewash house paint. Thus, coatings produced with this binder liquid will always have low hardness on drying and can be easily washed back off if re-wetted (i.e., have low water resistance). The binder also has a relatively low ability to suspend solids and generally produces medium to low viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With a pH of 7, the binder is generally not very reactive to materials. Other properties –long shelf life of over 12 months; use ONLY in inert or vacuum atmospheres … to 2000 C. ***Note-contains NO yttrium oxide.

ZAP Binder
Paint Binder that Allows Researchers to Produce Their Own High-Temperature Coating by Just Adding the Powder of Choice
The ZAP Binder is a water-alcohol-based binder liquid. ZAP Binder produces high hardness coatings on heating to its 350 C with relatively high water resistance. The binder has a low ability to suspend solids and generally produces low viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With a pH of 2-3, careful consideration should be used concerning whether the powder to be used is stable in an acidic medium. Other properties – relatively short shelf life of 3-6 months; used in all atmospheres to 1600 C.

Toughseal
Rigidizer that Seals in Surface Dust on Refractories While Providing a Refractory Surface.
Toughseal is a water-alcohol-based liquid which can be applied by bristle-brush, foam-rubber-brush, pump-sprayers and the like to most refractory materials … brick, blankets, foams, pulp-molded surfaces, etc. The Toughseal has a pH of 2-3 … which should be considered for some possible interactions [i.e., the surface being treated should be stable with an acidic material. Toughseal can sometimes provide a good “base” for applying refractory topcoatings [i.e., when used on fibrous surfaces etc.] — working well with acidic pH coatings. Other properties – relatively short shelf life of 3-6 months; used in all atmospheres to 1600 C.

Z-Primercoat
- Usable to 1800 F – Ideal for “used” hot-top billet casting tables
- Ready-to-apply, like ordinary paint primers by brush or air-spray
- Clean, safe-to-use
This water-based, clear light-syrup-appearing liquid is designed for sealing the surfaces of porous ceramics and boards. It is desirable to clean off as much residual dust and contamination as possible. By merely painting or swabbing this material onto the ceramic, the surfaces become much more amenable to topcoating with boron nitride coatings such as Boron Nitride Lubricoat-Bluewhich would otherwise react with residual Bone Ash and red mud.. By using the Z-Primercoat, spalling and mud-cracking can be prevented . Other properties — long shelf life of over 12 months; used in all atmospheres to 900 C.
For new billet casting tables, Z-Primercoat is normally not necessary.
- Allows old [“used”] casting tables to be boron nitride coated
- Seals the surface porosity of the ceramic
- Seals in the dust and contaminants
- Allows ready topcoating with acidic BN paints
- Can also be used as a ph-alkaline binder that gives tough coatings

YAG Binder
YAG Binder has a good ability to suspend solids. It yields very refractory 3Y2O3*5Al2O3 as the phase that bonds the ‘filler’ solids added to the binder. The melting point is 1940°C. With a pH-Acidic (3-4) range, this binder can be used with powder solids that are stable in acidic medium. YAG Binder has a long shelf life of over 12 months and is usable in all atmospheres to 1900°C.

Pyrrhos Binder
Water-Based, Alkaline pH, Silicone Heat-Resistant Binder
Pyrrhos Binder is a gray, water-based, silicone binder that produces tough, abrasion-resistant, and water-resistant coatings on all substrates. Full water-insolubility occurs after 100-150 C with all outgassing complete around 450 C. The binder produces good coatings with powders that are compatible with pH Alkaline/Basic liquids; usable to over 800 C (1472 F).
