Recommendation: Boron Nitride Hardcoat®
Boron Nitride HARDCOAT® is generally recommended for use with metal troughs because of its superior wear/erosion resistance and because of its ease in brush application to metal surfaces as well as its improved adherence. BN HARDCOAT® protects the metal trough from burn-through due to metal attack and allows easy removal of the skin or skull using gloved hands or pliers.
For first-time coating application instructions, please refer to product label and PAINTING INSTRUCTION GUIDE. Note: do not apply over other types of coatings- bone ash, red mud, ... etc. In cases where bone ash or red-mud have been used, then our special Z-PRIMERCOAT may be useful for "sealing in" the residual dust from bone-ash/red-mud.
BORON NITRIDE LUBRICOAT®-ZV is an alternative coating to BN-HARDCOAT®; the "ZV" still provides good abrasion-resistance, while also providing somewhat better nonwetting performance. And both HARDCOAT® and " ZV" are pH basic/alkaline -- which makes them good for applying to all metal surfaces.
Coating Maintenance Guide
The lifetime achieved prior to the need for coating maintenance is dependent mainly upon the degree of wear and erosion. Typically, 5 to 10 days of operation is observed.
Need for maintenance is indicated when skin or skull begins to stick. Quick touch-up maintenance is performed when needed usually by air-spraying a light touch-up coat where needed onto the hot trough after removal of any skin or skull. Brush application is also permitted, but the trough needs to be below about 170 F to avoid bubbling and flaking related defects. Only rarely is the trough stripped clean and recoated.
Most commonly reported coating defects are flaking or blistering. See Troubleshooting Guide.
