Aluminum Melting

We discovered, about 15 years ago, that Boron Nitride Lubricoat® provides a totally non-stick (i.e. like Teflon¨) surface such that molten nonferrous metals will not adhere, stick, or react.  Later, the Boron Nitride Hardcoat® was developed for resisting erosion, wear, or abrasion in use.   Recently, easily diluted Boron Nitride Lubricoat®-ZV was developed to allow a thin, relatively hard surface for moving parts in molten metal.

Our Boron Nitride Releasecoat® family is THE most economical version of Boron Nitride coatings. Our BN Releasecoat®-PM is in concentrated form to help reduce shipping costs and is routinely sold internationally.  BN Releasecoat® is even lower in cost and provides Teflon¨-like release for Permanent Molders. Unlike the BN Releasecoat®-PM, BN Releasecoat® is pre-diluted and ready to use.

WAGSTAFF CASTING TABLES Boron Nitride Lubricoat® and BN Lubricoat-Blue® are excellent for casting tables used in Wagstaff Billet Casters.  BN Lubricoat-Blue® is an easy-to-see blue color that provides Teflon®-like release that is so good that even mispours can easily be lifted out.  They extend refractory life, stops refractory deterioration due to corundum growth and avoids inclusions that are a problem with other coatings such as bone ash.

Z-Primercoat
This water-based, clear light-syrup-appearing liquid is designed for sealing the surfaces of porous ceramics and boards. It is desirable to clean off as much residual dust and contamination as possible. Still, Z-PRIMERCOAT can be coated over these materials to some extent. By merely painting or swabbing this material onto the ceramic, the surfaces become much more amenable to topcoating with boron nitride coatings such as Boron Nitride Lubricoat® and Boron Nitride Lubricoat-Blue® which react with materials like Bone Ash and red mud as well as some binders used in ceramic boards and the like . Without Z-PRIMERCOAT, the acidic Boron Nitride coatings can lead to some degree of spallation and/or mud-cracking that occurs either on drying or during high-temperature use. By using the Z-PRIMERCOAT, these problems can be prevented or reduced considerably.

CASTER TIPS

Changes in insulation characteristics of the caster tip can be caused by reactions between the binders of the ceramics tips and the molten metal. This reaction will form a black layer inside the tip. This layer decreases the thermal conductivity of the tip which adversely affects the properties of the sheet so that the properties of the sheet are not constant for the duration of the cast.

Boron Nitride Lubricoat® creates a protective non-reactive barrier inside the caster tip. This barrier will eliminate these reactions between the binders of the caster tip and molten metal so that the build up of black layer inside the tip is eliminated. This will ensure that the insulation characteristics of the tip are kept constant and the properties of the cast sheet do not change.

At the air-metal interface, MW-50 Paste (a fiber reinforced paste) is built-up as a thick (about 1/4 inch) layer so as to provide longer-life protection. MW-50 Paste can also be used to repair worn shafts and to repair cracks and breaks.  In one field test, a shaft that was reduced in diameter by over 50% was repaired to original dimensions and placed back into service.  The life of the repaired shaft was 2 1/2 times longer than that normally observed for a new shaft.

DROSS PRESSES

Boron Nitride Lubricoat®  is an excellent choice to prevent dross/skull from welding to the press head.  BN Lubricoat® provides protection and release for 40 to 50 cycles before re-coating is needed.  In field trials, BN Lubricoat® provided longer lifetime than any other coating available

FILTER BOXES

Boron Nitride Lubricoat® provides extremely easy removal of a filter. This is due to the Teflon®-like release properties of the coating. Instead of jerking and prying a filter out of the box, the filter simply lifts out with little or no effort.  Removal of the filter is this easy because the Boron Nitride Lubricoat® creates a layer of protection on the ceramic on which the aluminum and filtered impurities simply won't stick.

HAND LADLES & SKIMMERS

Boron Nitride Hardcoat®  is the product of first choice because of the high wear and abuse experienced with this use.  In addition to providing Teflon®-like release, BN HARDCOAT®saves money since the coating lasts about 7 times longer than the traditional coatings.  Also, BN HARDCOAT®is less expensive to use since coverage is much better.  About 1 gallon of BN HARDCOAT®replaces 20 gallons of traditional paints.  Also, because of the Teflon®-like release, dross build-up is eliminated allowing for cleaner pours and the elimination of mis-pours.

AUTO-POUR LADLES

BN Lubricoat® or BN Lubricoat-Blue® is recommended for this use because of its superior Teflon®-like release properties.   For auto-pour ladles, this is the property of most importance.  If aluminum skin builds up as it does with traditional coatings, mis-pours can occur because the shot size is reduced and/or the lip area is obstructed.

PINS & SPOUTS BN LUBRICOAT BLUE® (for Brushing)
BN LUBRICOAT
®-ZS (for Dipping)
BN LUBRICOAT
®-ZV (for Dipping)

For application using full strength (non-diluted) product applied by brush or spray, the BN LUBRICOAT BLUE® is the best product. Users especially like the blue color for ease in maintenance and application.

For dipping application, use the BN LUBRICOAT®-ZS or BN LUBRICOAT®-ZV diluted 4 or 5 parts water to 1 part paint. Agitate the mix in the dipping tank to keep suspended.

For denser ceramics, both the ZS and ZV formulations work the same. For porous ceramics the ZV formulation provides a harder, more durable coating.

STAULK TUBES METAL STAULK TUBES
BN Hardcoat® offers superior wear/erosion resistance and adherence and easy brush application to metal surfaces.  BN Hardcoat® protects the metal from burn-through due to metal attack and allows easy removal of any adhering dross or skin.  BN Hardcoat for this use is very similar to its use with metal troughs.  Staulk tube life is typically doubled leading to improved cost savings.  One firm saves over $400,000.00 per year by using BN Hardcoat® to protect their staulk tubes.

CERAMIC STAULK TUBES
The primary problem to be solved by a coating is to seal porosity that exists in ceramic staulk tubes.  Both of the products below have been demonstrated to work and the coating selection is primarily driven by shop practices.

BN Hardcoat® is applied to both the inside and outside of staulk tubes using either standard brushing or dipping methods.  If brushed, a roller or sponge attached to a pole facilitates coating the inside surfaces.  For dipping, a PVC pipe capped at one end and filled with BN Hardcoat® is one method used.  Alternately, for coating the inside of a tube, the tube itself can be taped off on one end, and the coating poured into it and then poured out.  If dipped, as much of the excess paint needs to be removed since thick coatings are much more likely to flake in service.

MW-50 Paste should only be applied by brushing to the outside of the staulk tubes.  Unlike BN Hardcoat®, a thick (about 10 mils or more) is recommended (fiber reinforcement used in MW-50 Paste permits thick coatings).  Of course, these thick coatings require longer time to thoroughly dry; and if not thoroughly dry before use, the coating will flake during use.  Many users employ a drying oven.

Performance data suggests that the MW-50 Paste is best at sealing the porosity but, of course, skin and dross will adhere -- unlike what would be observed with the BN Hardcoat®.

Some users will top the MW-50 with BN Lubricoat® .  Why BN Lubricoat® and not BN Hardcoat®?  MW-50 uses an acidic binder -- same as BN Lubricoat®.  BN Hardcoat® uses a basic binder.  If these two binders are not the same, an acid-base reaction can occur causing coating flaking.
