ZAP Binder
The ZAP Binder is a water-alcohol-based binder liquid. ZAP Binder produces high hardness coatings (on heating to its 350 C curing temperature for around five minutes) with relatively high water resistance. The binder has a low ability to suspend solids and generally produces low viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With a pH of 2-3, careful consideration should be used concerning whether the powder to be used is stable in an acidic medium. Other properties specific gravity of 1.27; 76% volatiles on heating to 600 C outgassing temperature [water, nitrogen oxides, and carbon oxides are the outgassing species]; long shelf life [12 months]. Note that, while the binder has a good shelf life, coatings prepared from it often can settle to create a very hard lump that cannot be resuspended: this can limit the shelf life of coatings made with ZAP Binder to a few months. Due to its liquid constituency, this binder has a flash point of 85 F. Based on a aluminum oxynitrate-oxyphosphate suspension agent/binder, 46.5 % aluminum oxide, 53.5 % phosphorus oxide results for the high-temperature binding. Thus, the ZAP Binder can be used in all use-atmospheres to 1800 C.
