YK Binder
The YK Binder is a nonaqueous-based binder liquid that is used for washcoatings such as yttria. The term “washcoating” is indicative of a low hardness coating similar to a whitewash house paint. Thus, coatings produced with this binder liquid will always have low hardness on drying and have low water resistance. The binder also has a relatively low ability to suspend solids and generally produces low viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. The liquid carrier being a mixture of ethyl alcohol and ethyl acetoacetate, this
binder/suspension agent is generally not very reactive to most materials, including water-reactive materials. Other properties specific gravity of 0.88; 97% volatiles on heating to its relatively low 350 C outgassing temperature [water and carbon oxides are the outgassing species]; long shelf life [>12 months]. Based on a cellulosic suspension agent/binder, a 100% glassy carbon phase results for the high-temperature binding, allowing YK Binder to be used in vacuum or inert atmospheres (i.e., not for air usage) to 2000 C.
***Note-contains NO yttrium oxide.
