Maskote Zinc Stop-Off

Stop Molten Zinc Adherence in Unwanted Areas

KEY ATTRIBUTES

• Allows both alkaline and acid cleaning after coating.

• Applied like ordinary housepaint.

• Stops galvanizing in unwanted areas.

• Ideal for masking threads, weld areas, and joints.

• Easily removed after galvanizing, leaving the area free of zinc.

• Fastest-drying stop-off available.

• Rapid delivery for all quantities.

Maskote Zinc Stop-Off is a specially formulated, solvent-based paint that is easily applied, fast-drying, and effective with pickling and galvanizing at 450 C (840 F). When brushed or dipped onto steel, the coating prevents the alloying process between zinc and steel due to the hot-dip galvanizing process.

After application and air drying, Maskote will withstand normal alkaline and acid cleaning operations before galvanizing. There is no peeling off of the masking coating during the galvanizing process. Maskote is ideal for masking off areas that are desired to be free of zinc -- thus preventing galvanizing and zinc adherence. No curing is needed -- simply allow to dry completely before placing into service. After galvanizing, the coating is easily removed with pressurized water rinse and/or by mechanical means.

MASKING

-Threads
-Weld Areas
-Joints

Maskote is easy to use, like ordinary housepaint and can be cleaned up or diluted with common solvents (MEK,hexane, toluene, acetone).

1. Resuspend the paint if needed.
2. Clean surfaces to be painted of oils,
     dirt, scale, etc.
3. Apply one or two thin layers by brush.     Dipping is also OK. Coverage: typically
    200-400 sq.ft. per gallon -- depending
    on thickness.
4. Allow to completely dry at room temperature
before use -- takes about 30 minutes.
5. Post-galvanizing: areas initially coated
    with Maskote will still "appear"
    galvanized/zinc-coated [i.e., they will
be coated with zinc ... but the zinc is
    not bonded/adherent to the metal
    substrate]; thus Maskote is removed
    by sandpapering or using scrubbing-pads,
    wire brushing, light-grit-blasting, shot
    or bead blasting, dry-ice [CO2]
    blasting, or water-jet power-washing.
