BNSL Binder

Paint Binder that Allows Researchers to Produce Their Own High-Temperature Coating
by Just Adding the Powder of Choice

BNSL Binder

The BNSL Binder is one of our most versatile suspension agent/binder liquids. It utilizes an alcohol-based binder liquid – the binder that is used with ZYP Coatings’ aerosol sprays. BNSL Binder produces moderate hardness coatings with moderate water resistance. The binder also has a moderate ability to suspend solids and generally produces low to medium viscosity coatings with most refractory powders. With its non-aqueous binder liquid, BNSL Binder is generally not very reactive to materials, so that most any powder can be used with it. Other properties – specific gravity of 0.82; 97% volatiles on heating to 150 C outgassing temperature [outgassing species of carbon oxides]; long shelf life [>12 months]. Based on a combination of organic and inorganic binders, magnesium silicate and glassy carbon result for the high-temperature binding. Due to the glassy carbon in the binder, in non-air environments, some gray appearance can occur with light-colored powder additions: this will “burn off” if the coatings are used in air environments above “red” heat (i.e., >700 C or so). Due to its liquid constituency, this binder has a flash point of 15 F. The BNSL Binder can be used in all use-atmospheres to 1600 C. It is often a preferred binder for first trials due to its utility in air environments and inertness to most powder additives.
